An explosion at a mosque in Pakistan's Peshawar killed at least 25 people

According to officials, more than a dozen people were killed and many others injured in an explosion at a mosque in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar.
A Peshawar police spokesman told Al Jazeera that at least 25 people were killed and at least 140 others were injured in the blast.
The explosion occurred in a mosque where a large number of people gathered for prayer, police spokesman Sikandar Khan told Reuters on Monday. “Part of the building has collapsed and several people are believed to be under it,” Khan added.
Al Jazeera correspondent Kamal Haider, reporting from Islamabad, said the emerging details suggest the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber. “The suicide bomber [reportedly] was sitting in the front row at a communal prayer inside the mosque,” he added.
38-year-old policeman Mina Gul said he was inside the mosque when the bomb exploded. He said he didn't know how he survived unscathed. According to him, according to the AP news agency, he heard screams after the bomb exploded.
Gul added that there were more than 150 worshippers in the mosque at the time of the bomb explosion.
Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan wrote on Twitter to condemn the attack.
“I strongly condemn the suicide bombing at the Peshawar Police Mosque during prayer,” he tweeted.
“It is imperative that we improve intelligence gathering and properly equip our police forces to deal with the growing threat of terrorism.” So far, no group or individual has claimed responsibility in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province bordering Afghanistan.
Last March, a suicide bomber attacked a mosque in Peshawar, killing 64 people in the deadliest terrorist attack in Pakistan since 2018.
