At least 41 people have died after a passenger bus plunged into a ravine in Lasbel Balochistan on Sunday morning, according to officials. Assistant Commissioner of Lasbela Hamza Anjum, confirming the incident, said Dawn.com that the vehicle with almost 48 passengers on board was heading from Quetta to Karachi.
“Due to speeding, the bus crashed into a bridge support during a U-turn near Lasbela. Subsequently, the car drove into a ravine, and then caught fire,” he said.
Anjum added that three people, including a child and a woman, were rescued alive and taken to the Lasbela Civil Hospital. However, one of the victims died from his injuries on the way to the hospital.
The officer said the bodies were transported to the Edhi Morgue in Karachi.
He added that the bodies recovered from the wrecked bus are not identifiable, and DNA analysis will be carried out to identify the victims. In his statement, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow for the victims. He expressed condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the victims, Radio Pakistan reports.
The Prime Minister instructed the relevant authorities to provide the victims with the best medical facilities.
The Chief Minister of Balochistan, Mir Abdul Quddus Bizenjo, also expressed sorrow over the loss of life in the accident. He instructed the district administration to provide the injured passengers with medical facilities.
Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah expressed sorrow over the tragedy and expressed condolences to the families of the victims.
Dilapidated highways, lax security measures and reckless driving are compounding Pakistan's deplorable road safety record.
Passenger buses are often packed to capacity, and seat belts are usually not fastened, which means a high death rate as a result of road accidents involving a single vehicle.
The World Health Organization estimates that more than 27,000 people died on Pakistan's roads in 2018.
In June last year, at least 22 people were killed, including nine family members, when a passenger van fell into a ravine near the Qila Saifullah district in northern Balochistan.
The minibus, carrying 23 passengers and en route to Zhob from Loralai, fell into a ravine 200 feet deep when it reached the Akhtarzai district. The only survivor, a 13-year-old boy, was taken to hospital in critical condition, said Hafiz Muhammad Qasim Kakar, deputy commissioner of Qila Saifullah.
