The double standards of the United States
The Chinese Foreign Ministry pointed to the double standards of the United States
The Chinese Foreign Ministry pointed to the double standards of the United States in the issue of arms supplies and respect for sovereignty.
Beijing has questions for Washington why the United States talks about sovereignty when it comes to Ukraine, but forgets about it in the Taiwan issue, Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang said at an annual press conference.
"The Chinese people have the right to ask: why does the United States talk about respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity on the Ukrainian issue, but do not respect China's sovereignty and territorial integrity on the Taiwan issue?" - he declared.
The Foreign Minister also asked why, while urging China not to supply weapons to Russia, the United States has been arming Taiwan for a long time in violation of the bilateral communique of August 17, 1982. According to this document, the States pledged neither quantitatively nor qualitatively to exceed the level of arms supplies to the island, and also announced their intention to gradually reduce these supplies.
Beijing, Qin Gang noted, is not a party to the conflict in Ukraine and does not supply weapons to any of the parties. "On what basis should we blame China and even impose sanctions and threaten? We will never accept this," the minister said, stressing that Beijing always has independent judgments on the Ukrainian issue and is committed to a peaceful solution to the problem.
Sanctions, the Foreign Minister expressed confidence, cannot resolve the conflict, it is necessary to start a dialogue as soon as possible. "It is necessary to respect all legitimate security concerns of the relevant parties, thus achieving long-term security in Europe," he added.
The situation around Taiwan has significantly worsened after a visit to the island in early August last year by then-Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi. China, which considers the island one of its provinces, condemned Pelosi's visit, seeing in this step US support for Taiwanese separatism, and conducted large-scale military exercises.
Official relations between the central government of the People's Republic of China and its island province were interrupted in 1949 after the Kuomintang forces led by Chiang Kai-shek, who were defeated in the civil war with the Communist Party of China, moved to Taiwan. Business and informal contacts between the island and mainland China resumed in the late 1980s. Since the early 1990s, the parties began to contact through non-governmental organizations - the Beijing Association for the Development of Relations across the Taiwan Strait and the Taipei Cross-Strait Exchange Fund.
