Beijing: At least 28 people were killed in an avalanche in the city of Nyingchi in the southwestern region of Tibet, the official Xinhua news agency reported late on Friday.
Rescue work at the scene has been completed, Xinhua reports.
Local authorities sent a total of 1,348 people and 236 pieces of equipment to assist in laying a 7.5-kilometer (4.66-mile) rescue passage, Xinhua news agency reported.
Fifty-three survivors were found, five of whom were seriously injured, the Global Times reported, citing a representative of the local government in the western Chinese region.
The avalanche occurred on a stretch of road between the village of Pai in Mainling County and the exit of the Dokson La Tunnel in Medog County at about 8 p.m. (1200 GMT) on Tuesday, leaving people and vehicles stranded.
At an altitude of almost 4,500 meters (14,764 feet), Box La Mountain has steep slopes, and the Box La road section is crossed. The avalanche was triggered by strong winds as the weather turns warm, Xinhua news agency added.
